Thank you for your kind words, Mehakpreet!

Alice Miranda was originally inspired by three girls whom I taught very early in my career. I like to think, now, that she demonstrates some of the best qualities of many of the amazing children whom I have met over the years.

Which idea made you write alice miranda
How did the idea came into your mind

July 14, 2017 at 9:45 pm

    Jacqueline Harvey

    Hi Kanita,

The idea of an irrepressible little girl with the chocolate curls being the heroine in a book came from many places- my experiences as a teacher, a shameless love of people-watching, an overactive imagination and the delight and wonder that I find working with children, continue to inspire the stories.
When I was thinking about writing the series, I decided to write a book that I would have enjoyed reading as a child. I am humbled that the children who inspire me to write seem to enjoy reading the stories as much as I enjoy writing them.

    Best wishes,

Hi Ms Harvey,

I love when each Alice Miranda book comes out. They are all very unique!

Does Alice Miranda in Hollywood come out in September?

Also have you had any ideas for AM book 17? Have you ever considered in an Alice Miranda book if like Lucas Alice Miranda had a new sibling? I think that would be really nice ๐Ÿ™‚

I love your books. They are great reads? How many more books are you planning to write?

    Hi Enya,

Thank you for your kind words- I love that the amazing children who inspire me to write seem to enjoy reading the stories as much as I enjoy writing them!

Not long now- yes, Alice-Miranda in Hollywood will be officially released on 1 September; however, I suspect there will be books available at book shops before that:). I hope that you enjoy reading it. I have many ideas for AM 17 swirling around in my head- the children will certainly be back at school but, perhaps, with some old friends. I suspect that Alice-Miranda will remain an only child.

I continue to enjoy the characters, relationships and intrigue in both the Alice-Miranda and Clementine Rose series’; the girls have many stories to be told and as long as I still enjoy writing the stories, then why stop!

Did you know that I am also writing a new series, titled Kensy and Max? I am currently pushing to finish the first draft of the first book by this weekend- but, I am so excited about the story and can’t wait to share it with the readers.

I don’t think that I will ever stop writing :).

What is it like to be a author

July 26, 2017 at 8:54 pm

    Jacqueline Harvey

    Hi Lily,

My life as a full time writer has and continues to involve lots of hard work, long hours and working to deadlines. Over the years, there have been many challenges and a need for resilience and flexibility.

However, aside from the fact that writing is who I am, my job allows me to indulge some of my other passions. I love travelling to interesting and exotic places. Quite a few of the Alice-Miranda adventures are set in some of the incredibly beautiful and interesting countries, which my husband, Ian and I have visited. The other passion that I indulge as a write, is that I am a shameless people-watcher; and what better thing to do whilst travelling to fascinating places. Golf is another hobby – often whilst travelling (as, with all the good will in the world, I find that I donโ€™t get as much time to play as I would like when I am writing at home).

I canโ€™t imagine a time when I will not be writing stories โ€“ as long as I still enjoy writing them then why stop!

    Best wishes,

    Jacqueline

That’s a lot of books! I’ve read all of the Alice Miranda books, except Alice Miranda shows the way, which I am planning to read very soon. I have read most of the Our Australian Girl books. They are so interesting, that it takes me less than an hour to read them. I’ve also read Matilda and Narnia, which are great books to read too. I have never heard of Redwall Abby or Wolf wilder but I am interested to know what type of books they are.

Hi Mrs Harvey!
I was just wondering what made you decide to name Alice-Miranda…well…Alice-Miranda? Why not another name? However, I hope you do not misunderstand as I absolutely love the name!! I am so excited for the next book, Alice-Miranda in Hollywood (I probably can’t buy it immediately when it is published as i recently bought 7 books…I think i emptied my mother’s wallet. Foe Alice-Miranda 17, I really hope that you can maybe write Alice-Miranda in either London, Germany, Greece or perhaps Singapore! I know that Singapore is a really small nation compared to the other nations but it has a rich and short history and it would be interesting with Singapore being a multi-racial society. I really want to see Alice-Miranda in a Greek robe and Greek God are so interesting! London and Germany are amazing nations too with amazing landmarks with rich culture. I also have a few ideas that I really wish that you would use, you can change it a little if you do not want to use the original idea. It is also fine if you do not want to use the idea, I do not expect you to literally use the idea, but I hope you would consider them!

So…following from Alice-Miranda in China and in Paris, Lucinda could transfer over to Winchester Downsfordvale Academy for Proper Young Ladies for a short period of time. Lucinda could then develope a crush on Lucas (She did not develop a crush on Lucas while they were in Paris because they did not really hung out with each other). She could then spend a lot of time with Lucas and Jacinta started to feel jealous and left out. She then started to ignore everybody except Alice-Miranda as perhaps they is a lot of stress on something…Then Alice-Miranda talked to Lucinda and explained everything.

Or maybe Alice-Miranda could discover a secret passageway in the Art classroom in the school, she then started to explore and found maybe a secret garden of sorts that has a gigantic library with many old books. She then told Ms Grimm and they found out that the library belonged to a famous musician and a treasure map of some sorts that led to the treasure of that musician. And someone wanted to steal it…..

What do you think? I really hope that you would consider these ideas!!

    Hi Daphene,

Thank you for your post, kind words and your great ideas and enthusiasm. It is humbling as a writer that the children who inspire me to write, are just so interested and invested in the stories.

The name ‘Alice-Miranda’ came from my imagination- I initially started with the name ‘Miranda’ and she really evolved from there. I’m glad that you love the name and hope that you enjoy Alice-Miranda in Hollywood.

Yes, Kensy is the (slightly) older sibling and a girl. I am excited that I have sent the first draft of ‘Breaking News’ (the first book in the series) to my editor. The twins will have many friends to share their adventures with.

You are a very optimistic, creative and imaginary person! You inspire me a lot! I just have to say this that you are my favourite author and I extremely LOVE your books!!! Hi Mehakpreet,

Thank you for your interest and enthusiasm. I really enjoyed writing Alice-Miranda in Hollywood– there are some fabulous new characters and, of course, many of the old favourites too. As I mentioned before, I am enjoying so many aspects of the stories and have ideas for plots and characters swirling around in my head all the time.

The next book (Book 17) in the Alice-Miranda series will be released next year. It has been a very busy time as I have just finished the first draft of the first story in the new series, Kensy and Max. It was a great feeling and I have fast fallen in love with Kensington and Maxim and the cast of characters supporting them. The release date for the first book is 1 March 2018.

In the meantime, Alice-Miranda in Hollywood will be out at the end of this month so I hope that you settle in and enjoy that ride too.

Hello Ms Harvey
I was just wondering…
How do you ever come up with the names of your characters and their last names/
Because for me I take forever!

August 14, 2017 at 6:50 pm

I do take a long time to think about the names. I use baby name websites and online phone books and I also collect interesting names when I’m out and about. Sometimes they come to me almost straight away and other times I think about them for a while.

      Hello Ms Harvey,
Do you know any other authors that write fabulous books like the series Alice-Miranda/
Plus why does Alice-Miranda in Hollywood have to come out in September?
      That feels like years away!
My final question for you Ms. Harvey is:
Have you started releasing the latest Alice-Miranda book already?
The reason why I am asking is because my best friend told me that libraries have already started to buy them but they are not yet on the shelves.
She also said that she has already read about half of the pages in Alice-Miranda in Hollywood.

        Hi Sandramaria,

You should be able to find Alice-Miranda in the shops around now I think. They are usually about a week earlier than the actual release date. Have you tried Friday Barnes by RA Spratt – she’s a great writer. Or what about some of Belinda Murrell’s time slip adventures? I hope that you’ll be looking forward to Kensy and Max – I adore them – as much as Alice-Miranda and Clemmie so I hope the readers will fall in love with them too.

        Hope you enjoy Hollywood.

          Hi Ms. Harvey,
Yes I have read some of Ms. Murrells books. I am currently having The Forgotten Pearl belonging to me. I simply adore her books though I have only read two of them. I have always wondered how authors like you, Ms. Harvey and Ms. Murrell come up with such fantastic series of books. Excuse me Ms. Harvey, but if you ever do get a chance, can you please meet or talk with Ms. Murrell to say how well I appreciate her books. Plus I was also dying to ask you are you currently writing another Alice-Miranda book? If so, can you please tell me where she has gone.

          Hi Sandramaria,

I will pass that message on to Belinda right away. She and I are great friends. I know she’ll be very chuffed. I am currently working on Kensy and Max and am so excited that they’ll soon be out there in the world (well – next March). I am about to start the second book in the series and then I will be writing another Alice-Miranda adventure with lots of her friends from all over the world coming together. Not sure what it will be called yet and it’s still percolating in my brain!

          Best wishes,
          Jacqueline

PS Alice-Miranda in Hollywood is out this week!

          August 23, 2017 at 6:43 pm

Sandramaria

Hello Ms. Harvey,
ARE THEY REALLY OUT THIS WEEK?!!! I am so exited! I just hope that my local library has bought the new book, so I can borrow it to read. Ms. Harvey can you please tell me who is the new character Alice-Miranda is going to meet in her adventure in Hollywood? I would really like to know. Plus Ms. Harvey I was just wondering how do you ever come up with the new places or characters that Alice-Miranda meets? And can you please give me tips on writing a descriptive piece? The reason I am asking is because my class are doing descriptive writing this term.

P.S
Have you thought about writing an Alice-Miranda book on her visiting Russia. If you see the past comments on this blog Ms. Harvey, you can see that the first comment I ever sent you was a suggestion on a new Alice-Miranda book.
The other fantastic places Alice-Miranda should go are:
Mexico, India, Libya and other places in Africa and finally Italy!
The reason that I am asking you to write about an adventure to India is because I am from there plus I would like to know more about Alice-Miranda’s meeting with Price Shivaji.

With thanks,
Sandramaria

Hi Ms Harvey.

I am so excited that you are making a new series for older kids! I have been reading Alice-Miranda since I was 9, and now I am 14 and still love reading them. Do you actually visit the places before you write about them? Also, does Alice-Miranda live in Australia?

Thx
Casey.

    Jacqueline Harvey

    Hi Casey,

I’ve been to most of the places that the stories are set. I went to Hollywood and the Grand Canyon last Christmas to do my research for Alice-Miranda in Hollywood. Kensy and Max is set in a part of London that I know well, having stayed around there several times.

I’ve never actually said where Alice-Miranda or Clementine Rose live. I worked in a school in the Southern Highlands of NSW that reminds me a lot of AM’s school but it could also be England. I want readers to make up their own minds!

I hope that you’ll enjoy Kensy and Max – I’m loving writing their stories.

    Best wishes,

A picture book called The Sound of the Sea. It won an Honour Book Award in the 2006 Children’s Book Council Awards and is the only picture book I’ve ever done. It’s a sad story based on true events.

    Hi Kenzie,

I have written stories since I was a child and, as a young teacher, I would write stories and plays for my students. The first books that I wrote for publication were the Codename series in 2003. I’m not even sure that these books are still available for sale.

Hi Ms. Harvey,
I have been a fan of Alice-Miranda since Grade 2 and now I am in Year 7 and I still love these books. Are there going to be any new characters soon? I just wanted to say that you and Alice-Miranda have inspired me to be nice even though I don’t feel like it. Is it hard being an author and do you get and do normal things like normal people without being constantly surrounded by paparazzi?

    Jacqueline Harvey

    Hi Naomi,

Thank you – I love that you’ve been reading the books for so long. Yes there are new characters coming in the next book and I’m thrilled that AM inspires you to be nice even when you’d rather not be :). I don’t have to worry about the paparazzi – they’re not very interested in children’s authors (which is kind of good and a bit annoying as that would mean children’s books would be considered more important and interesting). But then again I can go to the shops with messy hair ๐Ÿ™‚

Hello Ms Harvey,
I am a very avid reader of the Alice-Miranda series-they’re just too good! I started collecting when I was in grade 4, and now I’m in grade 11! I absolutely adore the series. I’ve read them over and over again. Number 4:At Sea is my most favourite. I guess I just really like to read about a young girl that goes on all sorts of adventures and the some of the worlds greatest manners. I love to look out for one particular line: ‘There was just something about the little girl with cascading chocolate curls…’ It just makes me smile every time. I loved seeing Luca and Jacinta’s character growth when they were in China and I think that it is so beautifully written.
I have read a lot of book series and this is one that no matter which book it is, I will still always love to read. So thank you for being one of my top-time all favourite writers!!

Also I have just one question: Where is Alice-Miranda set? I could never quite work out the geography.

Thank you Cordell – your comment has made my day! I don’t think you’re ever too old for AM! And in answer to your other question – I very deliberately never said where exactly (country wise) that AM was set. I wanted readers to make up their own minds. So it could be England or it could be Australia or it could be a made up place. Up to you. Your favourite line is also one of mine.

Best wishes – hope you’re okay in this strange time. It must be tough being in Year 11 and navigating school at home.

    Take care and stay well,
    Jacqueline

I love her too (and I’m an Aussie as well Isabella).

Sadly I don’t have any curls. My hair is dead straight and I wish I had curls!

    Best wishes,

How many books have you written? I lost count.

I’ve read all the Kensy and Max and just finished reading the most recent one, Full Speed, for like the 6millionth time. Is there another one coming out and when? I am addicted to anything to do with spies at the moment… but hopefully it’s not just a stage and never goes away because it is AMAZING and it led me to you! I did the reader’s cup at my primary school and my school came 2nd place for my district and one of the books was Kensy and Max number 1, and I was just saying to myself, “wow the reader’s cup not only showed me like 1 new book, it showed me a million new books!” I’m a bit of a book worm, so I finish thick books like yours in like 2 hours… I wish I read slower then I wouldn’t be freaking out waiting for the next one!!! I wish Kensy and Max would hurry up and figure out Headmaster Magoo’s code!!! Why did it say “Romilly must be stopped???”

I love your books they are the best!!!

Oh Katie thankyou for your gorgeous comment – you really made my day. I hope that you’ve found Kensy and Max: Take Down which came out at the beginning of March. I’m just starting to get sorted for number 8 – still really pondering locations and what’s going to happen (as I still have to finish the page proofs for Alice-Miranda in Egypt). There are some interesting ongoing mysteries to solve :).

    Have a lovely weekend.

    Best wishes,
    Jacqueline

I love to play golf and travel and eat out – and play the piano. I like to fish and snow ski and ride my bike. I have recently started going to the gym and while I have never been a gym person before I am enjoying it a lot. It’s F45. I also quite like doing housework which I know sounds a bit weird (except shower scrubbing – I hate that!). I don’t mind cooking if I have time but it’s not my favourite thing to do.
