Last chance to nominate your favourite books in this year’s YABBA, KOALA and KROC awards!

March 25, 2021 by Jacqueline Harvey 61 Comments

REAL AWARDS – Australia’s Children’s Choice awards (YABBA, KOALA and KROC)

These awards mean so much to me as they are voted by kids – the people I write for! I’ve been fortunate to be on the REAL shortlist every year from 2012-2020 (except 2018). The only way to get on the list is for our readers to nominate and vote – so click the following links to make your choices but do it soon.
YABBA NOMINATING LINK Voting closes Wednesday 31 March so you need to get in quick!
KOALA NOMINATING LINK Voting closes this FRIDAY 26 MARCH so you need to get in even quicker!

Make sure that you vote for book titles too – not just the series.

A couple of weeks ago I was interviewed on the School Broadcasting Network and Funky Kids Radio, along with Andy Griffiths, Deborah Abela and Tristan Bancks about the REAL awards which form the shortlists for the annual children’s choice awards in Victoria (YABBA), NSW (KOALA) and the Northern Territory (KROC). Michelle Nye who is the Coordinator of the YABBA awards co-hosted the show with the lovely Reka and Ginger who are still at school. I love this network and the opportunities afforded to young people who are interested in a career in radio (I would have adored doing something like this when I was a kid).

You can catch the show with Andy Griffiths, Deb Abela, Tristan Bancks and me on the link here and don’t forget to vote for the REAL shortlist via the links below which then goes on to become the YABBA, KOALA and KROC award shortlists in Victoria, NSW and the Northern Territory.

    Ms. Harvey,
I’ve got a few questions – do you mind?

In Alice-Miranda in New York, there is an uncanny link between Mr. O’Leary and Paddy O’Leary in Kensy and Max 2: Disappearing Act – are they the same person?

Have you linked (apart from the movie links in AM in the Outback) these series before?

Do you plan on doing a book where all three series merge?

When do you think your latest AM will come out at earliest?

From one of your most faithful readers,
    Abigail

How many kensy and Max books are you planning to make?
In Clementine rose in the movie making book, the lady- Ms Spencer, is she related to Kensy and Max’s Family?

      Hi Alice,

I constantly am on the lookout for new plots/characters for my books, but Kensy and Max was inspired on a trip where I sat down at a table to eat at a place called the Morpeth Arms in London, we were given a pair of binoculars to ‘spy on the spys’ as MI6 was opposite where I was eating. I asked one of the staff whether they see much going on in the MI6 headquarters and after a discussion about how people are on the balcony, the lights go on and off but he had never seen anyone inside really got me thinking about whether the MI6 is just a cover location for spies and what if they secretly work in some underground very fancy office that nobody knows about, hence the creation of the school that Kensy and Max go to!

      Best wishes,

      Jacqueline 🙂

I would have loved to go to a school like Alice-Miranda’s, Clementine Rose’s and especially Kensy and Max’s (to learn how to be a spy) as well I think it would be lots of fun!

We have to do like, so many hours of homework everyday. I try to keep in touch with my friends after school (via Zoom and emailing) but I ever have enough time with my activities and homework. Grade Five have to do three FULL ON tasks for Maths, English and Religion. The only things I’m good at are Writing, Art, History and Science. Math is a different story. I’m always in the Math extension group even though (fun fact) I HATE MATH.
My teacher say she loves my stories because their content includes a major amount of detail and imagination, whatever that means. Every time I write a story at school though, there’s usually a time limit of 40 minutes. I never really get past the complication during my short stories because I think over the top and run out of time.

The moral of this comment is,

I HATE HOMEWORK AND MATH (don’t forget the dreaded Math… :/)

First of all, I’m a really big fan. I started reading your books about two years ago, and I fell in love with them. I was just wondering if Alice-Miranda In Egypt would be the last of the series? I would be disappointed if it will be, but hopefully you would have time to write more amazing series!

I’m so sorry for annoying all of you, but could you read the slam poem I’ve written for my creative writing class and maybe give some feedback?

    Part 2: Dominoes

I watch as my cousin arranges his dominoes on the table.
All standing upright in a long, perfect row of white.
He reaches out, using a single finger to push the first domino down.
It sways, before falling onto the one in front of it.
Before I can blink, the entire row has collapsed onto the table.
He lets out a gleeful laugh, like it’s the funniest thing in the world.

I am five years old again, bouncing in my mother’s lap,
As she reads to me books of love, laughter, life lessons.
One day, when reading Chrysanthemum, she paused.
“You might meet someone like this one day.” She whispered,
Gently tapping on the illustration of Victoria, the mean mouse
who loves to make Chrysanthemum feel bad about her name.
“And when you do, I want you to remember
That people like these aren’t worth your time.”
“What if I become one?” I’d asked.
    “Hopefully you won’t.”
I never forgot her sad eyes, the tight grin as she spoke.

I often skip the bad parts in books
Rather be swept away in perfect fantasies
    than grounded in reality.
But when I do, I remember my mother’s words.
And feel sick to my stomach as I read about one’s revenge plot on their friend,
“To make them learn their lesson.”
Believe me, if I could, I would protest.
“Don’t! When you mess with someone’s life,
You unfortunately can’t be that precise!”
Because whether we realize it or not,
life is like the snowball perched at the edge of an icy slope.
Like the pond whose murky waters ripple when a pebble is thrown into it.

    Life
    is
    like
    the
    row
    of
    dominoes.

All it takes is one small push for the entire row to fall.
    And everything…
    … affects everything.

It’s worth 75% of my grade ;-; so any feedback/constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated!! 🙂
