Shortlists are up for the Newsletter Writing Competition and a new Dress Up Competition for Book Month!
The entries are in and the shortlists have been decided!
Hello,
First of all I want to congratulate everyone who wrote a story for the competition. As you know we had three categories K-2, Year 3-6 and Year 7 and up. There was an impressive number of entries in each section but the Year 3-6 group really outdid themselves with over 80! There were 10 entries from K-2 and twenty in the Year 7 and up group. To have received over 100 entries altogether was fantastic and terribly difficult to assess!
I was impressed with the diversity and creativity of your ideas. There was also a lot of good structure, grammar and spelling – so it shows that you took your time with editing as well as writing the drafts. It was pleasing to see that most of you stuck to the guidelines as well including the required sentence or concept and adhering to the word limit.
There are three shortlisted stories in the K-2 section, 10 in the Year 3-6 and 5 in the Year 7 and up.
Names are listed in alphabetical order. There will be one winner in each category to be announced in the September-October newsletter.
If you didn’t make the shortlists, please don’t be discouraged. The fact that you took the time to work on a story is fantastic and believe me, I’ve had plenty of disappointments in my time as a writer too. The most important thing is to never give up. You become good at something by practicing often – so keep on writing and creating. You never know what might happen in the future.
Congratulations to the following shortlisted writers. I will be taking my time over the next week or so to select the winners!

Hello from Bally Puss
Hello Friends,
Did you know that we are now in Level 4 lockdown here in New Zealand because there’s been some of that pesky Covid 19 in Auckland and Wellington? That means nothing is open apart from supermarkets, chemists and service stations. It doesn’t change my life one bit. Mum can still get my food and I’m enjoying my days sleeping, eating and playing – yes you heard it here first. I’ve become playful in my old age. Mum tied a little ratty to a string – he has a bell on his tail and I like to chase him and chew him. It’s very quiet where we live – although I’ve noticed that all the dogs around here are getting some pretty busy workouts – sometimes three or four times a day. I love watching them from my windows – poor things out there in the cold while I’m toasty and warm in front of the fire. Stay well friends and talk to you again soon in the newsletter.
Lots of love, Bally Puss xx
Best wishes, Jacqueline xx

hey Jacqueline I wonder where Alice-Miranda is set in what country I can’t stop thinking where it is set can you email the answer to me and I love your books.
Jacqueline Harvey
Hi Zoe-lailia,
I have never said which country Alice-Miranda is set, I like to leave that to the reader’s imagination!
Jacqueline 🙂
Charlotte
I think personally it is set in either England or Australia because there are lots of little hints e.g. in book 17 it mentions that the students from new zealand travelled the furthest so it leans to england but in book 20 it mentions that Hugh and Lawrence drive the children to the outback and it doesnt mention a plane trip.
By the way i love your books and have all of them! XX
Jacqueline Harvey
Hi Charlotte,
I have never said where Alice-Miranda is set, I have left that up to my readers – but it is most commonly thought she lives in either Australia or England.
Thank you for your kind words, I’m thrilled to hear you love reading my books! 🙂
Happy reading,
Jacqueline

Hi, Ms Harvey!
I really love your Alice-Miranda books. I love watching the plot unravel before my eyes. The writing is excellent too!
I have one question for you. Is Ms Grimm (headmistress of Winchesterfield-Downsfordvale) related to the Brothers Grimm? If she was, that’d be delightful, don’t you think?
Cheers,
Jewel

Hello Jacqueline
Who illustrates your books?
Because they are very good
Lara
Hello Ms Harvey,
This is amazing, these books got me reading!
I was wondering if there are going to be more Alice Miranda books?
Jacqueline Harvey
Hi Lara,
Thank you for your messages, I’m thrilled to hear you enjoy reading my books. 🙂
I hope that you enjoy Alice-Miranda in Egypt and Kensy and Max: Chasing Danger. I also love Kensy’s dress in Kensy and Max: Undercover!
Good luck with your NAPLAN and you never know what Alice-Miranda may be doing in the future, I am sure she would be super encouraging for her friends if they were nervous or worried about it.
Anne Yi is the illustrator for the Kensy and Max, Alice-Miranda and Clementine Rose series. For my new picture book, ‘That Cat’, Kate Isobel Scott (who I taught when I was a teacher!) is the illustrator. They are both so talented and I feel so lucky to have them to bring my characters to life that I have written.
Happy reading,
Jacqueline
Lara
Alice Miranda should do NAPLAN, there could be a missing test, and her and her friends could find it.
Jacqueline Harvey
That’s a good idea – maybe not NAPLAN but an important test for sure!
