VOTE NOW to win Top 50 Children’s Books!

Hi Everyone,

It’s that time of year again where you get to vote for your favourite children’s books in Australia in the Better Reading Kids Top 50! Last year I was so thrilled to have Alice-Miranda and Kensy and Max books on the list but I need your help to get there again. You need to vote for a specific title not just the series in order to make it count and in doing so you’ll go into the draw to win all 50 of the books that make it to the Top 50. Voting finishes Thursday 13 June so don’t delay and cast your vote (or votes) now!!  CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE VOTING PAGE

Thanks for your support,

Jacqueline Harvey

I also voted for Alice-Miranda,
And I have read all your books more than twice
Thank you so much, Mimi

    Hi Mimi,

The movie is animated – that was the decision taken by the production company and I’m afraid that when you have a book optioned a lot of the control goes out of your hands as the author. I hope you’ll enjoy it just the same.

Hi!!
Not sure if you remember me, but it’s Lyla. I voted for Alice-Miranda at the Palace and wanted to let you know how much I adore the Alice-Miranda series. It’s one of my all-time favourites, and I’m actually rereading it now for what feels like the billionth time, yet I’m still finding out things I didn’t know before! The Alice-Miranda series is easily my most read series. I love the journey these books take me on every time I read them and can’t wait to read about her next adventure. 🙂

Hi Jacqueline,
I voted for Clementine Rose and the Farm Fiasco as it is my favourite book. You are my favourite author, which is why I am doing my school speech about you. I have read all the Clementine Rose books and I am now reading the Alice-Miranda books at the moment she is in New York. I was wondering if you had any interesting stories about writing Farm Fiasco that I could talk about in my speech.

Thank you and please keep writing great books.

Thanks Nara! I really appreciate your vote. Farm Fiasco was based on the fact that I used to take my Kindergarten kids on an excursion to a farm every year. I do remember there was a boy in my class called Joshua who fell in a sloppy cow pat and the farmer shot milk at the children from the cow’s udder! Good luck with your speech.

Frankie

Hello Mrs Harvey,
Just today I got Alice-Miranda Keeps the Beat! I had pre-ordered it from my bookstore about a month in advance. I am up to chapter 11, it is so good so far!! I love it, so far it’s my favourite Alice-Miranda book.

I am 14, and have been reading Alice-Miranda for a long time. I was just wondering, the book mentions that Jacinta is in year 8, how old does that make her? Also, are Chessie and Sloane in the same grade as Jacinta?

By the way, are you coming to visit Brisbane or the Gold Coast any time soon? Also, I can’t wait for the next Kensy and Max Out of sight!!

Thank you so much 🙂

    Jacqueline Harvey

Oh Frankie – you have made my day! I’m so glad that you’re enjoying the story. Jacinta is a little bit older than Sloane and Chessie. I am teaching a writing course in Brisbane in the next school holidays but it’s listed as Primary aged children. I will be back up there in October for some events though so keep watch on my website.

Hello Mrs Harvey
Just wondering if you could ever make Alice-Miranda into an episode/TV show. I have read every one of your books and for my birthday, my parents are getting me the latest one, I can’t wait. If you ever make this into a movie I would be over the moon, you are my favourite author too. Also, I have plenty of ideas for what new books you could write, even though I might be a little bit outside of the age bracket you were aiming at (I am 12). If you make this book series into a movie or TV show all the Alice-Miranda Fans would have someone to look up to as the face of Alice-Miranda.

    Hi Mia,

AM is going to be a movie at the end of the year. I am very excited about it but I can’t tell you too much at the moment – except to say that it is well into production and I’ve seen the animatic (which is like the rough copy of the animation). It’s gorgeous.

hi!
I just finished reading Alice-Miranda in Hollywood and I’ve been wondering:

1. Are Jacinta and Lucas the same age?
2. Are Chessie and Sloane the same age?
3. Are Millie and Alice-Miranda the same age?

You’d think that I know after reading 16 books of the Alice-Miranda series but I honestly don’t know!
Also I think Lucinta (Lucas and Jacinta) are a great couple!!! We should come up with a ship name. I think Lucinta is good!

June 7, 2019 at 7:19 pm

    Hi Houda,

Lots of kids ‘ship’ Lucinta to me – you’re all far cleverer than I am – it took me a minute to work out what they meant but it’s adorable!

Dear Mrs Harvey
I was wondering if you could make Alice-Miranda into a movie, please. It would be a great opportunity for all the fans of the Alice-Miranda series to have someone as the face of Alice-Miranda to look up to. I have also voted for the Alice-Miranda series for the best book. You are my favourite author I am about to get the new Alice-Miranda book and have many ideas of what it could be about. Even though I may be a bit old for this series (I am currently 12) I am a little bit like Ms Tyger Lombadi, I will forever be drawn to your books. I have read each of your books at least more than once and a few at least 10 times.
Thank you so much for being an amazing author,
Mia

    Hi Mia,

There is going to be an Alice-Miranda movie – it will be out in November this year! It’s animated so she actually looks exactly like on the books. I don’t think you’re too old for AM at all. I still have girls in the upper years of high school writing to me about the books. I agree you can read whatever you like for as long as you like. I still have books I read that I adored when I was a child.

Make sure that you’re signed up for my newsletter and you will get all the updated news about the movie – I am sooooo excited – it’s going to be gorgeous!

    Hi Houda,

I am sorry the messages have disappeared. They don’t actually disappear – it’s just that I have to approve them an reply and I haven’t had any time to keep up with the administration lately so I do apologise.Lucas and Jacinta are the same age. Millie is almost three years older than Alice-Miranda. When they met AM was seven and a quarter and Millie was almost ten. But because AM is so mature it never seems like there’s a gap. Sloane and Chessie and Millie are all pretty much the same age. I love Lucas and Jacinta too – they’re adorable.

Hi, just wondering when AM in Australia is coming out?
We’ve been waiting a long time.

June 17, 2019 at 3:30 pm

    Jacqueline Harvey

    Hi Tayra,

I am still thinking about when to write that one – it’s tricky as I’ve never said where AM is set but I think a trip to the Northern Territory or Barrier Reef would work well.

    Best wishes,
    Jacqueline

    Tayra

I think AM only really works if its set in the UK. Because if she’s australian how would her grandmother know the queen?
Also, AM goes to a school for “proper young ladies” and that sounds british/english.
AM also calls her parents mummy and daddy, and I know that might be because she’s young but the older girls do that too. And that’s not something you hear everyday in Australia (I would know, I live there) Anyway, I’m sure whatever you write next will be great. No hate. Sorry for the long comment, bye.

      Hi Tayra,

You’re a very good detective and I think I would have to agree with most of what you’ve said. But I have worked in a school a lot like Winchesterfield-Downsfordvale and I know of another school where the kids take their horses so maybe…

I don’t mind your long comment at all – shows that you really thought about things.

        Hi,
I would say that a lot of these things happen in Australia too, or at least where I live in Australia (I go to a private school that is extremely similar to AM’s school as well). These are just some thoughts though.
        Thanks, Lily

          Hi Lily,

I never specified where the books are set so that readers can make up their own minds. I worked at a couple of private schools in Australia and agree that lots of the things in the stories happen here as well as at schools in England and in other places overseas.

        Jacqueline Harvey

        Hi Ashlyn,

Footnotes are just acknowledgements usually at the bottom of a page to attribute the quote. But in this case as long as you mention at the end of your story something about the quote coming from Alice-Miranda at Sea copyright Jacqueline Harvey, that’s fine. It’s a good thing to learn as when you get older and have to do lots of research the teachers will require it.

        Best wishes,
        Jacqueline

Hi Jacqueline,

Recently I was thinking that I was getting too old for AM, I am twelve and i know this isn’t the oldest of your readers by far but I still felt too old for your books. Anyway the other day I was walking in the city with my mum and i asked her if i could go into Dymocks. While I was in there I saw Alice Miranda Keeps the Beat and my mum suggested that I buy it with my gift voucher. I did buy and I absolutely LOVED it- definitely not too old for Alice Miranda, it’s my favourite AM so far.

One of the reasons I loved it so much is because of Lucinta’s parents being in it, I won’t say too much just in case some people haven’t read it yet but I would just like to say that I have been waiting for them to make a reappearance for a long time and was so excited to see them in it.

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for reminding me that i’ll never grow too old for Alice Miranda and her friends. (:

Also, when I was seven or so I didn’t like reading that much and I especially didn’t like writing or english in school that much, but then I read the start of Alice miranda at School during our school library time. Quite literally from that day on I loved reading so much and I vowed I would be a writer when I grew up and five years later it’s still my dream and I still absolutely love Alice Miranda and the adventures that she and her friends get up to. Your books opened up the beautiful world of stories to me. 🙂

From Lexi

PS. I just realised how horribly long this comment is, I didn’t realise it would be so big!!

Oh Lexi – your lovely long comment has made my week! I love that you’re not too old for Alice-Miranda and that you really enjoyed the story. I had a ball writing it and am looking forward to the next one. To hear that Alice-Miranda has had such a positive impact on you as a reader is incredibly humbling for me and makes me smile from ear to ear. As a writer you always hope that you might have an impact – this is wonderful.

Thank you and make sure that you’re signed up to the newsletter to get all the exciting Alice-Miranda movie news 🙂 It’s coming really soon (and will be on at the movies for a little while – I can’t say too much yet!).

    Best wishes,

      Hi Chloe,

Please don’t apologise. Your comment didn’t make me uncomfortable at all. I’m not sure about an answer as it’s something I would need to discuss with my publisher. I suspect there have already been a couple of diverse characters! There are currently 18 books in the series and I am contracted to write at least two more (and possibly more after that if kids keep reading them.).

Hope you get to read them all :).

Dear Jacqueline,

I absolutely love your books.
Me and my friends want to work together and make a costume for us.
I will be Jacinta, then my friends will be AM and Millie. 🙂

Everytime I go to the school library I always choose an AM book.
I always finish it before it’s time to return it.

I LOVE YOUR BOOKS!!!!!

Can’t wait to see a lot more.

I’ve got a suggestion – since the girls really like AM and CR I think maybe a book for the boys would be a good idea. Like the adventures of…

My friend, Olivia, has all of the AM and Kenzy and Max books. She loves them.

She always lets me take a book and read.

I have 6 CR at home on the bookshelf and 1 AM in my bed. L0L!!

Can’t wait for more!!!

Thx!! Love Kathryn

PS: Can’t wait for book week……….

Hi Jacqueline,
Just wondering if you have started writing AM 19, and when it’s coming out?
Also, this is a bit left field, but one of the other girls asked about lgbt characters and if you were going to ever have any? I know you’re probably hesitant because of what parents will think, but alot of the people who read AM have been for years and I think are old enough to make up their own minds about things like that. All I’m saying is if you ever do write an lgbt character I will stick by you, my loyalty to you will never die.

August 19, 2019 at 3:27 am

    Jacqueline Harvey

    Hi Tayra,

Thanks for your message. I will be starting AM 19 once I finish Kensy and Max 5 (which will be before the end of the year). I haven’t thought a lot about LGBTI characters in the story – it’s a bit of a tricky one to navigate though I won’t shy away from having a broad representation of society in the stories. I’m thinking about your comment a lot – so you never know.

    Best wishes,
    Jacqueline

My name is Mia and one day you came to my primary school, in 2018. The school was called Camden South, In Australia. I love your books and you. My favourite Alice-Miranda book is Alice-Miranda in Paris! I hope you reply, but I understand if you don’t because of how busy you are!

Lots Of Love Mia x

    Hi Mia,

I love visiting Camden South – it’s a huge part of my childhood. You can tell all your friends and teachers that Alice-Miranda Friends Forever – the animated movie of Alice-Miranda is coming out in November – and will be at the movies!! You can read about it on my blog or the newsletter.

    Best wishes,
    Jacqueline x

Hi Jacqueline!

For the longest time, ever since I was little, I was always a bookworm. I loved reading anything that was in my house, be it anything from a car instruction manual to a children’s novel to a fashion magazine. Oh, and the more ‘childish’ it was, the better!

More recently however, I got more and more into gaming and socializing with others through social media. I slowly let go of my reading habit and as time went by, I felt like I turned into a different person. I remember there was a certain period of my life where I wanted to be an author and have a career much like yours; to write stories that make children (and teens, judging by your diverse audience) genuinely happy.

Three to four years ago, I was at a bookstore and I picked up my very first Alice-Miranda book. It was Alice-Miranda at sea, if I remember correctly. I took just one read and fell in love with it. Your writing style is so friendly! The words communicated with me in such a way that even though it was in third person, I still felt like one of Alice-Miranda’s close friends (Millie or Jacinta if I really put my head into it) experiencing everything with her. She and her group of friends were honestly one of the best things that happened to me.
It was like a world where good always rules over, in a way that it wasn’t unfair to anyone or biased in any way. Sometimes when I read fairytales, I often felt that the bad characters were the ugly and cruel ones, but your books taught me otherwise. Bad people often come in many forms, and so do good people. in fact, Alice-Miranda put me under the (very lovely!) impression that there aren’t any bad people at all; just good people that have done or have been influenced by bad things.

My Alice-Miranda obsession also slowly faded with this ‘Change’, unfortunately, but (here comes the good part!) My aunt was paying a visit to Australia and got me some of the newer Alice-Miranda books from Sydney! All of a sudden I was more into the books than ever. actually, this was a better time for me to read the books then before because I understand some things better: the lucinta relationship (which I am a big fan of!), or the concept of divorce and greed for money for example.

Anyways, thank you so much for the Alice-Miranda series: They made up a HUGE part of my childhood, and now they’ll rule over my teenage years too! They mean so much to me.

P.S: I look forward to reading AM keeps the beat soon! I’ll let you know how I felt about it.

    Hi Jessica,

Apologies for my slow reply. Your post made my year! I love that you have rediscovered a love of books and reading with AM. Your words mean so much to me. I think I actually cried when I read them. Thank you for getting in touch and I hope that we get to meet one day. Where do you live? I gather it’s not Australia. I’m so excited today to be able to announce the animated Alice-Miranda movie details – it’s been a while coming. Hope you get to see it wherever you are.

    My very best wishes,
    Jacqueline xx

      Hi Jacqueline!
Thanks for replying! I’m actually In Pakistan. There’s a 5-6 hour time difference between us. I’m so happy that you liked my comment! you’re such an amazing author and your reply actually made me feel like crying (happy) tears myself!

An Alice-Miranda movie? Sounds cute and wholesome; I’ll try my best to watch it online if possible. Or I can purchase the script whenever my family and I come to visit Australia. I (like AM) am quite experienced when it comes to convincing people.

      I also have some questions!

      1. Earlier, it was mentioned in an article that the movie would be called ‘Alice-Miranda Shines Bright’ but now it’s changed to ‘Alice-Miranda friends forever’. Just wondering if there was a particular reason it changed? I thought the title of book 8 worked just fine with the events of the movie 🙂

      2. You mentioned in a reply to somebody’s comment that Alice-Miranda 19 might be in Australia. Is that true? If it is, I’m so excited! Australia is so unique: I read about the wildlife and spiders there and I heard that the Sydney funnel-web is particularly deadly. Not just that, there are so many fascinating sights to see and places to go. I can picture Alice-Miranda bonding with the animals, jacinta and caprice getting into silly squabbles over something or the other (jacinta is my favorite character!) and Millie producing yet another guide book and snapping pictures of the scenery (sep and sloane would just sit back, relax and enjoy the show). If not Australia, then where? Just curious for what you have in mind.

      3. What’s next for Lucinta? They seemed pretty joined at the hip in Scotland if you ask me. There might be some moments in the movie but that takes place some time in the beginning of the Alice-Miranda series; it’s a different thing altogether. They’re basically endgame (become a couple in the end) but won’t the relationship get boring without some spice? If caprice really is better then it might end up looking like a repetition of moments from before. Something you can do is give sep or sloane someone to love. I feel like sep is just so sweet and smart and sloane is starting to become like him. They’re as old as Lucas and jacinta (I think) and they deserve it for sure.

      4. Is clemmie 15 the last clementine rose book? I haven’t read too many of them but my interest was piqued when I heard it was. Also, how many AM books will you think you’ll get to? I think your last book for Alice-Miranda shouldn’t be a book where everybody is all grown up: for me the best way to end something is to leave room for imagination. Still, I can’t imagine it ending D:

Thank you for putting up with all my nonsense Jacqueline! (I can call you Mrs. Harvey if you like).

I look forward to hearing your reply,

        Hi Jessica,

In answer to your questions – I think that the movie company decided that they would call the movie a different name from the books so that readers didn’t think it would be exactly that book (and Friends Forever has none of the Shines Bright storyline in it). I think that was a good plan which has worked well and the second movie is going to be called Alice-Mrianda A Royal Christmas Ball.

I’m still working on the storyline for Alice-Miranda in the Outback but it will definitely involve lots of Australian wildlife and the landscape and some baddies too of course!

In the movie Lucas and Jacinta are just starting to fall for one another. So you’re right that’s it’s a different time period. I can’t make things too serious because the readership of the books is from quite young to teens so I have to be mindful to keep it fairly sweet and simple. I do like the other kids having crushes too/

Yes Clemmie 15 is the last book in the series (for now anyway). I feel like I have other things I want to do and so I’ve come to a point where I think it’s a natural ending.

Thanks for being such a gorgeous fan!
        Best wishes,

Sorry, I wanted to post something else.
    ANYWAYS. . .

When COVID-19 disposes a bit more and we’re allowed to travel, can you please please PLEASE come to Sherwood Ridge Public School?????

You’ve inspired me to be the best I can be always, and so has your characters. I guess the one who’s more like me is Jacinta. We both have an anger tantrum side, but a friendly one too. And we’re both TERRIBLE crush hiders as well.

I’ve been writing books since I was in 2018 (year 3) and I must thank you for that.

I’ve got a question for you.
Who is your idol and why?
